I would like to improve on my public speaking because I have to do it a lot. In school, we have to do a lot of public speaking when we present projects and I often don’t feel confident at all. I also have to public speaking outside of school to my family and to my sporting teams. I think that it is a vital skill to have, especially in the future and at workplaces, and I would like to develop it so that I can do it easily.
I would like to learn how to teach and work with children because I have a younger brother and I would like to be able to teach him new things and help him with his homework. I also enjoy being with younger children and I have many younger relatives so I think that it would be a good skill to have so that I can help them.
I would like to learn how to write a resume because I will need to know how to write resumes in order to apply for work in the future. I believe that it is one of the key skills that I need to develop which will stay with me my whole life and help me when I am looking for employment. At the moment, I do not know how to write resumes so I think that I should start learning how to do so soon.
My knowledge of Melbourne streets is limited and that is why I would like to improve them. I think being able to navigate your own city is very important as there might not always be a map to help you. I also think that I should learn Melbourne streets so that I can travel confidently by myself in my own city. I believe that I could do this by starting off with learning the names of the city streets and where they are and which other streets are close by, then learning the streets in my area. I would also like to know on which street important buildings are. I could start by creating two maps, one from my area and one of the city, and marking out the streets. I could then pick out the most important buildings and label them on the map. I think that by placing the maps somewhere where I will see them every day (maybe the bathroom mirror) it will help me improve my knowledge of Melbourne’s streets. I would then also like to know where the freeways and tollways are in relation to my house and also other main roads. These will take longer to learn but I believe that it is an achievable goal.
As with working on my skills for Melbourne streets, I would like to work on my public transport skills. I would like to do this so I know how to navigate my way around Melbourne confidently and on public transport. Having even a basic knowledge of which routes go where would help me feel more confident and safe in Melbourne.
I have growing interests in architecture and saving the environment. I chose to learn more about sustainable buildings because we need to start making our buildings environmentally-friendly but they still need to be functional. The main reason I would like to know more about sustainable buildings is I would like to see how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go (in terms of energy efficiency etc.) and what we can do better.
A personal quality which I would like to have more of is self-esteem. Self-esteem plays a key role in everyday life both at school and outside of school. I believe that having a strong self-esteem is very important in order to feel content with yourself and to help you be more accepting of both yourself and the others around you. I would like to improve my self-esteem so that I can also build up more confidence and feel more comfortable around others.
Another personal quality which I would like to focus on this term is collaboration. In most situations, people do not work alone but work with others as well. Collaboration is a quality I would like to possess so that I can work in groups more efficiently and learn how to negotiate and be accepting if things do not go the way I would like them to. I also believe that being part of a team is very important, so knowing how to work in a team is even more important.
I need to work on believing in success. I often expect the worst from myself and from the other people around me. This can sometimes be helpful as you realise the possible problems, but most of the time, it just puts me down and lowers my belief that I will do well. I think that by working on believing in success, this will make me a more positive person and will help me become more optimistic.
Hi Jess,
Do you think that you are already making progress with your goals? Did last week’s sessions on the city grid & public transport [and the trail on Friday] start to make you feel more confident about your knowledge of Melbourne? Were you on Jane’s trail yesterday? That would have been a great introduction to sustainability in action & in design 🙂
You will have a lot of support with public speaking – we will have a gentle start & then will run a workshop before your major presentation.
Good luck with achieving these goals – I have lots of trust that you will blitz them!
🙂

Hi Tamar,
Last week’s session on the city grid was helpful. Something that I learnt was that number 1 is on the corner of Flinders Street and Spring Street and the further you go away from that corner, the higher the numbers get. The public transport system session was also educational and I think that the sessions prepared me for Friday’s trail. It also helped that I had someone in my group who knew their way around the city really well so I learnt some things off them as well. As it turns out, I was on Jane’s trail yesterday and Helen’s house was very inspirational and gave me a few ideas of what I can do at my house. It’s great to hear that we will be easing into public speaking – that idea seems to make me feel more comfortable.
Thanks for your faith in me,
Jess
